Intransitive verbs expressing that something is naturally visible (見える) or audible (聞こえる) without conscious effort. The perceived object takes が, never を. Distinct from potential forms 見られる (able to watch) and 聞ける (able to listen) which imply intentional action or opportunity.
Common mistakes
- Confusing with potential forms 'mirareru' or 'kikeru'
- Using 'o' instead of 'ga' for the object
- Using when you mean 'to look like' (though 'mieru' can do this, it's a different nuance)
