FAQ
Common questions
- Are JLPT mock tests free?
- Yes. Every mock test on JLPT Mastery is free to take. You'll need a free account to track progress and see your score history, but individual tests do not require payment.
- What is a JLPT mock test?
- A JLPT mock test is a full-length simulated exam that mirrors the real JLPT's format, timing, and question types. Our mock tests include all sections - language knowledge (vocabulary and grammar), reading, and listening - scored on the same 0-180 scale as the actual exam.
- What's the difference between a mock test and a past paper?
- Mock tests are our original practice exams that you can retake as many times as you like. Past papers are official JLPT exams from previous years (July and December sessions), reproduced for exam-day calibration. Past papers are the gold standard for predicting your real score; mock tests are the better tool for repeated practice.
- How many mock tests should I take before the real JLPT?
- Most N3-N1 test takers benefit from 3-5 full mock tests in the final month, plus 1-2 past papers to lock in exam-day pacing. N5/N4 candidates can do fewer (2-3) since the test is shorter. Focus on error analysis between attempts, not volume.
- Do I need to take the full test in one sitting?
- For the most accurate prediction of your real score - yes. The real JLPT is a 2-3 hour endurance test and stamina matters. That said, you can section-practice on our platform if you're short on time, and your score estimate will still be useful.
- When do the past papers unlock?
- All past JLPT papers go live together on May 5, 2026 - two months before the July 2026 JLPT. We launch them as a set so every level gets high-quality exam-day calibration at the same time.
