Around half the length of a full paper, so you can fit one into a single sitting. Vocabulary, grammar and reading only - no listening section.
What the N1 paper looks like
N1 uses the same three-section structure as N2 and N3, each out of 60 with a 19-point minimum, but needs 100 of 180 overall, the highest pass mark of any level. December 2024 passed 28.7%, the lowest rate on the ladder.
The mistake that fails people who knew the material
The reading passages are the longest and densest of any level and the time allowance is the binding constraint for most candidates. N1 also draws on formal and literary grammar that daily conversation never covers, which is why fluent speakers can still fail it.
How to use these papers
Sit full papers rather than practising in fragments. N1 is as much a test of sustained concentration across the whole sitting as it is of language knowledge.
A mock paper is only worth the time if you sit it the way you would sit the real thing: one go, clock running, no dictionary. Scoring well on a paper you paused halfway through tells you nothing useful about whether you are ready.
