due to/because of (negative)
Category: Cause and Reason
The grammar pattern "V・A・Naな・Nの + せいで" is used to express a negative result or place blame on a specific cause. It is a causal expression that indicates the reason for an undesirable outcome. The pattern follows the same formation rules as 'okagede' but is specifically used for negative results. It is often used in informal conversations and can be replaced with 'tame ni' in formal objective reports.
| Form | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Na-adjective form | V・A・Naな・Nの + せいで | 雨が降ったせいで |
| Noun form | V・A・Nの + せいで | 電車の遅れせいで |
| Verb form | V・A・Vの + せいで | 雨が降ったせいで |

隣の部屋がうるさいせいで、ゆうべは全然眠れなかった。

隣の部屋がうるさい (the neighboring room was noisy) せいで (because of) ゆうべは全然眠れなかった (couldn't sleep all night)
This pattern is used in informal conversations to express a negative result or place blame on a specific cause. It is not suitable for formal objective reports, where 'tame ni' is a better choice. The pattern can be used with Na-adjectives, nouns, or verbs.
The pattern is specifically used for negative results, so using it for positive results can be confusing and incorrect.
While both patterns are used for causal expressions, 'okagede' is used for positive results, whereas 'V・A・Naな・Nの + せいで' is used for negative results.
The pattern is informal and should not be used in formal objective reports, where 'tame ni' is a more suitable choice.
Pay attention to the nuance of the pattern and use it correctly for negative results. Be careful not to confuse it with 'okagede' or use it in formal objective reports.
