not only... but also
Definition
The grammar pattern "名詞/動詞・形容詞普通形 + ばかりでなく" is used to emphasize that something is not limited to one thing, but includes others as well. It is often used to add information and provide additional context. The pattern is similar to "not only... but also", and is used to convey a sense of inclusivity and breadth. For example, "彼は日本語も英語もペラペラです" means "He is proficient not only in Japanese but also in English".

Context
This pattern is used to add information and provide additional context. It is often used in formal or written Japanese. It is similar to the pattern "not only... but also", but is slightly more formal. It is also similar to the pattern "dake de naku", but is used to convey a sense of inclusivity and breadth.
Watch out
Forgetting to use 'mo' can make the sentence sound less formal or less inclusive.
Using it without 'mo' can make the sentence sound less formal or less inclusive.
Using 'dake de naku' instead of 'mo' can make the sentence sound less formal or less inclusive.
Strategy
In the JLPT exam, this pattern is often tested in the reading comprehension section. Be sure to pay attention to the context and the use of 'mo' in the following clause. Also, be aware of the difference between this pattern and 'dake de naku'.
