Context
This pattern is used in casual and semi-polite contexts to negate the copula. It is often used in everyday conversations to say that something is not something else. The polite form "ではありません" is used in formal contexts.
Watch out
"じゃない" is a casual form and should not be used in formal or polite contexts. "ではありません" is the polite form and should be used instead.
"ない" is an adjective negative and should not be used to negate the copula. "ではない" is specifically used to negate the copula.
"じゃない" is a contraction of "ではない" and should be used as such.
Strategy
Pay attention to the context and register of the sentence. If the sentence is in a formal or polite context, use "ではありません" instead of "じゃない". Also, make sure to use "ではない" to negate the copula and not "ない" or "いない".
