There is / exists (animate)
Definition
The grammar pattern "がいる" is used to express the existence of living things, such as people, animals, and insects. It is a polite way of saying that something or someone is present in a particular location. The location is marked with "に", and the living thing takes "が". This pattern is often used in everyday conversations to ask about the presence of people or animals in a certain place. For example, "公園に子どもがいますか?" (Are there children in the park?)

Context
This pattern is used to express the existence of living things in a polite manner. It is often used in everyday conversations to ask about the presence of people or animals in a certain place. The polite form "がいます" is used when speaking to someone with higher authority or respect. The negative form "がいない" is used to express the absence of living things.
Watch out
The pattern "がいる" is used to express the existence of living things, while "ある" is used to express the existence of inanimate objects.
The particle "に" is used to mark the location of existence, while "で" is used to mark the location of action.
The particle "が" is used to mark the living thing, while "を" is used to mark the object of the action.
Strategy
When answering JLPT questions, make sure to use the correct pattern "がいる" to express the existence of living things. Pay attention to the particle used to mark the location of existence and the living thing.
In context
Worked examples drawn from JLPT N5 test-style questions. Each sentence shows がいる used correctly, with a brief note on what the pattern is doing.
公園に子どもがいます。
Pattern used: が
が marks the animate thing (子ども) that exists. In the existence pattern [location]に[living thing]がいる, が is required for the subject.
庭に猫がいます。
Pattern used: がいます
猫 (cat) is a living thing, so がいます is correct. があります is for inanimate objects. を and で cannot replace が in this existence pattern.
教室に先生がいます。学生はいません。
Pattern used: がいます
先生 (teacher) is a person, requiring がいます for existence. The sentence says the teacher is there but students are not. があります would be for objects.
