Through; via; by way of (an intermediary)
Category: Method and Basis
The grammar pattern '名詞+を介して' is used to indicate that something happens through a third party, medium, or intermediary. It often implies a person or a specific system acting as a bridge between two entities. This pattern is commonly used in situations where a person or a system facilitates communication, exchange, or interaction between two parties.
| Form | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Dative form of the verb | 名詞+を+[verb in dative form]して | 友人を介して (through a friend) |
| Te-form of the verb | 名詞+を介して+[verb in te-form] | インターネットを介して接続する (connect through the internet) |
| Infinitive form of the verb | 名詞+を介して+[verb in infinitive form] | 弁護士を介して交渉する (negotiate through a lawyer) |
二人は共通の友人を介して知り合った。
Futari wa kyōtsū no tomodachi o tsukau shite shiriaitta.
They met through a common friend.
二人は (They) + 共通の友人 (common friend) + を介して (through) + 知り合った (met)
インターネットを介して、瞬時に情報を共有することができる。
Intānnetto o tsukau shite, shunkin ni jōhō o kyōsha suru koto ga dekiru.

弁護士 (lawyer) + を介して (through) + 交渉 (negotiate) + を行う (do)
This pattern is used to indicate a third party or intermediary facilitating communication, exchange, or interaction between two parties. It is often used in formal or professional contexts. Be careful not to confuse it with 'o tsuujite' (which is broader) or 'o megutte' (concerning).
For example, '私は本を読む' (I read a book) instead of '私は本を介して読む' (I read a book through a book).
For example, '情報をインターネットを介して' (information through the internet) instead of '情報を介して' (information through a medium).
For example, '彼のことを話して' (about him) instead of '彼を介して話して' (through him).
Pay attention to the context and the type of action being described. Make sure to use the correct form of the verb and the correct particle to indicate the intermediary.
