JLPT vs J-Test vs NAT-Test vs BJT: Which Japanese Test Should You Take?

Compare the four major Japanese language proficiency tests — JLPT, J-Test, NAT-Test, and BJT — across frequency, recognition, cost, format, and which is right for your goals.

The JLPT gets all the attention, but it's not the only Japanese proficiency test. If you missed the JLPT registration window, need faster results, or want a business-specific certification, there are legitimate alternatives. Here's an honest comparison of the four main options.

Japanese Language Tests Compared

JLPT: The Gold Standard

The JLPT is the most recognized Japanese proficiency test worldwide with 1.72 million applicants in 2024. It's accepted by virtually every Japanese employer, university, and immigration authority. If you can only take one test, this is it.

  • Universally recognized in Japan and internationally
  • Certificate never expires (see our validity guide)
  • Now includes CEFR mapping on score reports
  • Clear, well-defined levels with published vocabulary/grammar lists
  • Used for visa point calculations (HSP, SSW)

JLPT Limitations

Only twice a year. Registration fills up fast in many countries. No writing or speaking component. Results take 2 months. You must choose your level in advance — if you misjudge, you either fail or pass too easily.

J-Test: The Flexible Alternative

The J-Test (Test of Practical Japanese) is the strongest JLPT alternative. It runs six times a year, includes a writing section, and results come in about a month. It's well-recognized in Japan, especially by companies that hire foreign workers.

The J-Test uses a continuous scoring system rather than pass/fail levels. You take one of three exam tiers (A–C for advanced, D–E for intermediate, F–G for beginner) and receive a score that maps to a specific rank. This means you can't "fail" in the traditional sense — you just get a lower rank.

NAT-Test: The Budget Option

The NAT-Test mirrors the JLPT format almost exactly — same level structure (5級 through 1級, corresponding to N5 through N1), same question types, similar difficulty. It's essentially a JLPT practice run that gives you an official certificate. It runs six times a year and is popular with Japanese language school students.

The trade-off: lower recognition. While some Japanese companies and language schools accept NAT-Test results, it's not recognized for visa applications or by most universities. Think of it as a stepping stone to the JLPT rather than a replacement.

BJT: For Business Professionals

The BJT (Business Japanese Proficiency Test) is purpose-built for professionals. It tests business communication scenarios — meetings, emails, reports, phone calls — rather than general language ability. It's computer-based and available year-round at test centers, with immediate results.

The BJT is valued by Japanese companies that hire foreign professionals, and it's specifically recognized by the Japan Immigration Bureau for visa point calculations. If your goal is working in a Japanese corporate environment, the BJT demonstrates practical business skills that the JLPT doesn't cover.

Which Test Should You Take?

Take the JLPT if...

You want the most widely recognized certification. You're applying for jobs, universities, or visas. You're comfortable with the twice-yearly schedule. This is the default choice for most learners.

Take the J-Test if...

You missed JLPT registration. You want more frequent test opportunities. You want a writing component. You're already in Japan and need a quick certification.

Take the NAT-Test if...

You want JLPT-format practice with an official certificate. You're in a Japanese language school that offers it. You want a confidence check before the real JLPT.

Take the BJT if...

You're already working or planning to work in a Japanese business environment. You want year-round availability. You want immediate results. Your company values business-specific Japanese skills.

Can You Use Multiple Tests?

Absolutely — and many serious learners do. A common strategy is to use the NAT-Test or J-Test as a mid-year gauge of your level, then take the JLPT as your main certification. Business professionals often hold both JLPT N1/N2 and BJT results, since they demonstrate different skills. The tests aren't mutually exclusive.

Quick Decision Guide

  • **JLPT** = the gold standard, take this unless you have a specific reason not to
  • **J-Test** = best alternative: more frequent, includes writing, well-recognized in Japan
  • **NAT-Test** = budget JLPT practice with a certificate, but limited recognition
  • **BJT** = business-focused, year-round, immediate results, good complement to JLPT
  • You can (and should) use multiple tests strategically
