JLPT Exam Fees by Country (2025)
Fees Vary by Level in Some Countries
2025 Fee Increases
Several countries raised JLPT fees in 2025, driven by currency fluctuations and rising venue costs:
- Canada: Increased to CAD $85–100 (was $75–85)
- United Kingdom: Increased to £60–75 (was £50–60)
- India: Modest increase across all levels due to inflation adjustments
- Several European countries: Small increases of €5–10 at various centers
New: Duplicate Certificate Fee
New Policy: April 2025
What's Included in the Fee
- ✓The exam itself (one sitting, one level)
- ✓Score report (mailed to all examinees)
- ✓Certificate of Proficiency (mailed to those who pass)
- ✓Online score verification (available ~1 month before mail delivery)
- ✓CEFR reference level on score report (December 2025 onward)
Refund Policies
JLPT refund policies vary by country and are generally strict:
- Japan (JEES): No refunds after the application deadline, even for illness or emergencies
- Most overseas centers: No refunds after registration closes. Some offer partial refunds if you cancel well before the deadline
- No transfers: You cannot transfer your registration to another person or another test date
- No level changes: Once registered for a level, you cannot switch to a different level
Payment Methods
Payment methods vary by country. In Japan, you can pay at convenience stores (konbini). In the US, credit cards are accepted through the online portal. India uses online banking and UPI. Check your local organizer's registration page for accepted methods. Most countries require payment at the time of registration — you can't reserve a seat and pay later.
Cost-Saving Strategies
- Skip levels strategically. If you're confident, skipping from N5 to N3 saves you two exam fees (~$120 in the US).
- Take the test where it's cheapest. If you're traveling in Southeast Asia around exam time, fees in Indonesia or Vietnam are a fraction of US/UK prices.
- Prepare thoroughly first. One well-prepared attempt is cheaper than two or three unprepared ones. Use practice tests to gauge readiness.
- Check for employer reimbursement. Some Japanese companies and language schools reimburse JLPT fees if you pass.
Fee Summary
- Fees range from ~$10 (Indonesia) to ~$95 (UK) depending on country
- Several countries raised fees in 2025 (Canada, UK, India)
